Aries: March 21 – April 19

As each sign is given a month one wonders why Aries, which is the first sign in the Zodiac, is given to the month of March and not to January. The reason for this can be traced all the way back to the Sumerians. Their year began in March on the spring equinox. This fact reveals the nature of the sign: the vitality of spring and the return of the sun, which are key themes related to Aries.
Aries started out as a Babylonian farm worker or ‘hired hand’, which later became Dumizi the Shepherd king. Both related to the farming calendar. The Egyptians developed this idea further, portraying the constellation as a ram-headed god, representing both fertility and the vitality of war.
Aries has much to do with the solar qualities of creativity, energy, enthusiasm and courage. The Sun is the symbol of consciousness, individuality, clear direction and definition – the power of the will to rise above instinct and take control. The Romans saw Aries as ruled by the planet Mars which was personified by the Roman god of war ‘Ares’, thereby accentuating the martial character of this sign. This latter is the aspect that I have incorporated into this painting.

What is a giclée print?

Derived from the French, “giclée” means “sprayed” and is an advanced digital printmaking technology involving archival quality inks that are finely jet streamed onto fine archival papers. Giclee printing provides superior color accuracy and incredible detail over other modes of reproduction.

Giclee prints can be found in New York’s Metropolitan Museum as well as galleries and auction houses throughout the world.

Aries is a limited edition giclée print of the original painting, made with archival pigment inks on heavy stock, natural white (not bleached) fine art etching paper. The matte etching paper nicely presents the brushstrokes and texture of the original painting.

All prints are signed and numbered by the original artist in the border beneath the image and come with a certificate of authenticity and an embossed stamp by the master printer.
