We see the three goddess Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld, representing the past, present, and future, weaving the web of the ‘weird’, a Norse and Anglo saxon conception of the magical matrix that binds all together. They are traditionally the inventors of the runes, the Norse letters of magic which are all derived from shapes that can be found within this matrix, the crossed lines shown. This historical fact is woven into the composition combining myth, history and artistic symbolism into a greater whole. The Norns then weave the web of the weird, creating the magic spells from the combinations of letters that are drawn from the matrix.
