Demeter, the Greek Goddess of wheat, agriculture and all that grows, holds the sheaf of wheat and a sickle. With that she is representing the immortality of the soul and the cycle of existence. She stands in front of the ‘kiste’  that contains the sacred items for her ritual held in the darkness  of the underworld. This ritual is known as the Eleusinian mysteries and was enacted in Greece for  more than a thousand years. This ritual was held in accordance with the cycles of the moon which are shown behind her, while the autumn sun warms the fields and ripens the crops.
