The Norns 1 – Great Goddess

LIMITED EDITION GICLÉE PRINT

The image depicts the three goddesses Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld, whose names translate as What Is, What Was and What Will Be, revealing their immortal nature and relationship to time. Here they are spinning the thread of time that represents the events in the world and the tapestry of life, as they are the fates who decree the lives of men. They sit beneath the Tree of life, another ubiquitous cultural theme and which is in fact a symbolic representation of the Goddess nature her self.

Her triple nature represents the three worlds of heaven earth and the underworld that she rules and was symbolically incorporated into the designs of the Tree of life since earliest times.

I love the way that mythology has this elegant and sublimely coherent algebra of symbols that have been so well preserved through the thousands of years since they were first conceived and it makes me proud to be able to continue this preservation through my art.
